Bhagat Singh is a unique freedom fighter. A martyr revolutionary who wanted to overthrow the British imperialist power and build a 'socialist' India like Soviet Russia. He wanted to build an India free from exploitation, and that freedom was not only from the yoke of imperialist exploitation, but also from all forms of exploitation of people by people. He stated this in his defense during the trial of him and Batukeshwar Dutt for the crime of throwing bombs at the Central Assembly Hall. That ideology seems to have been repeatedly expressed in this work, Why I Am an Atheist. This work was written by him while he was in Lahore Central Jail. He wrote, “A man who is for progress, he has to criticize, doubt and distrust every element of the old belief. He has to hold and test every element of the conventional belief” . He also wrote here, “I am convinced of the non-existence of any supreme being who controls and directs nature” . He also wrote four other essays which the British government did not allow to be taken out of the jail. No one knows what was written in them. When Kisan Singh went to meet the jailed child, this essay was secretly brought out by his hand. The Sangh Parivar has been trying to portray Bhagat Singh as the leader of distorted nationalism for a long time. This essay "Why I am an Atheist" is also a protest against that lie.
